The Piscataway School Counseling Department offers a comprehensive, developmental program to all students from Kindergarten to 12th Grade. During the year I will be teaching monthly classroom lessons, running groups and helping students resolve conflicts. We will also have fund-raisers and out-reach projects.
Please feel free to call or email me any time with questions or concerns. Classroom Lessons: 4th Grade: Students are completing a self-assessment called, "Responsible School Behaviors: Self and Perceived Teacher Evaluation". The worksheet lists positive school behaviors such as "I show respect for others and their things" and "I take responsibility for my actions" with a rating scale of "Almost Always" "Sometimes" or "Almost Never". The students not only rate themselves on these behaviors, they also rate how they believe their teacher would rate them. When everyone is finished, each student picks one of the behaviors and has a "reality check" with the teacher. (Most would like to ask several, but there is only time for one!) Some students are very accurate with their teacher ratings, while some are too easy or too hard on themselves. The students are reminded that one needs to try to be accurate with self-assessments so that appropriate adjustments can be made where necessary.
5th Grade: Students are watching a video entitled, "How to Succeed in Middle School" and are writing down any tips they think will be useful next year. Some of these include: 1) writing down your locker combination in a number of places, 2) keeping a large calendar with all your assignments, games, lessons, etc., in your room or the kitchen, 3) writing down all your assignments, 4) joining new clubs 5) asking for help when you need it, and 6) starting long-term projects early. While some students have expressed some apprehension regarding entering Middle School, most students seem to feel that it will be a new and exciting time for them!
Have a wonderful summer! Please remember to have your child read, practice math facts and do the summer project! Good luck to the out-going 5th graders and we look forward to seeing our new 5th graders in September!
