MAY {spring} 2012
As the warm weather continues to play Peek-a-boo, it is hard to believe that the school year is coming to an end already. We are full swing with NJASK preparation in Math and Science. This will be done mainly in class. Please note that at King School, teachers collaborate to make sure student work and assessments are similar to NJASK, as well as the district Benchmarks. NJASK4 Testing will be the week of May 7-11, 2012. Please make sure students eat breakfast and get a good night's rest each night. Also, please be certain that students arrive at school on time. Testing will begin first thing each morning. NJASK4 will be administered every morning that week. Monday and Tuesday will be Literacy testing, followed by Math on Wednesday and Thursday, culminating with Science on Friday. Students have been working hard all year!
In Science, students are finishing up Chapter 1, Classifying Living Things. Groups have been busy creating their own plant and animal cells for display. What a creative bunch!
In Math, we have been hands-on with fractions. Students have been using fraction boards, geo boards, and creating fraction favorites as they learn more about fractions each day. While most of the lessons come from Chapter 9 in the text, some lessons are being pulled from the Investigations Unit. Please continue to check out the following websites for additional support.
Below are a few sites that will provide additional practice.
Calculate the area and perimeter of given shapes. This is a fun site for students to learn about basic fractions with an on line exercise. It advances to equivalent fractions and adding fractions. A student developed unit on fractions. Includes recipes. This was a ThinkQuest winner. Students will reinforce their knowledge of fractions by using online pattern block activities. The lessons are designed for students to work independently or with guidance from the teacher. Lessons should be printed so students can draw and color the appropriate shapes. Which fractions are equivalent? Fraction Flags Halves and Quarters Students design a flag using the proportions given.
