May 2012

April sure was full of showers!  Let's hope the May flowers are on the way.  This past month was full of measurement mania in math.  We've been using tools like rulers, protractors, and charts to work with all types of measurement.  Practice measuring everyday objects at home, and your student should be abe to convert them to other units as well.  For example, if your student is 4'7" tall, they can also say they are 55 inches tall!  Our ecosystem unit in Science ended with some real-world research about endangered species in our state of New Jersey.  Your little problem-solvers have a list of ways that they (and you) can help!

We'll continue measuring in math, with some unconvential units like time.  Our class will focus on Social Studies this month and learn about the earliest colonies in our country.   The big event this month is NJASK testing!  On the week of May 7th, make sure your child gets a good night's sleep, and a healthy breakfast before getting to school on time.  I'm confident that our 5th graders can hit it out of the park!
