NJ ASK Testing May 7 -11

Testing Reminders

·        Get plenty of sleep

·        Arrive to school on time

·        Do your best

Literacy: In Literacy this month we will continue to read historically themed selections.  Through the stories presented in the selected books the students will study relationships between historical events as well as the cause and effects each event had historically.  Since there are multiple, books the students will engage in a round table Book Talk describing their selections and have an opportunity to compare and contrast the different pieces of writing.

During May the students will also be working with Word Origins, prefixes, suffixes and other elements of word entomology (a clever way of saying Spelling).  At the end of May is the Scripps National Spelling Bee, so the hope is to inspire students to investigate and expand their own use of words through games like Scrabble and internet activities from the Scripps website.  This study will segue into a unit on Poetry.

Math:  The mathematical emphasis will be on linear and area measurements.  Students will be comparing the perimeters and areas of rectangles when the dimensions are multiplied by a certain amount.  They will also use numerical and/ or geometric patterns to describe how the perimeters and areas of rectangles change when the dimensions change.  Students will create different rectangles with the same area but different perimeters and different rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas.

Social Studies: The Big Idea of Chapter 4 is cultural differences and competition for land led to conflicts among different groups of people in the Americas.  In this chapter students will locate lands in North American claimed by Spain, describe the relations between the English and Native Americans, learn how people lived in the Plymouth Colony, and describe how European nations struggled for control of North America.
