Math– In April, the students began their Geometry Unit. First, they worked in their textbooks to identify geometric terms, classify, measure and draw angles, and learn relationships between parts of a circle. Then, they moved into the Measuring Polygons Unit- Investigation 1,where they classified polygons by looking at attributes including numbers of sides, lengths of sides, and sizes of angles. In May, they will move into the Investigation 2 part of the unit, where they will be focusing on perimeter and area of squares, as well as doubling dimensions of squares. They will be building sequences of rectangles and similar polygons, identifying different perimeters but same areas of rectangles, and working with volume, congruence and similarity, as well as transformations and symmetry.
Science- We finished our study on Ecosystems in April. In this unit, students learned how plants produce food and how energy is passed through an ecosystem, as well as how organisms compete and survive in
ecosystems. Students also learned how ecosystems change over time and how they are affected by people. As a culmination to this unit, students made fantastic Recycled Projects which are displayed in the Media Center! We also had MC Blue speak to us about recycling! What a way to finish our unit and celebrate Earth Day!!
Social Studies- In May, we will begin our unit on The First Colonies. Students will be learning why the Spanish explored the Americas and how the Virginia colony was settled. In addition, they will learn about relationships between the settlers and the Native Americans, the problems pilgrims faced, and how English settlers developed ways to govern themselves.
