Young Girl

A group of selected students in our district were asked to respond to the following questions about Math.  Here is what they had to say…

What do you like most about math?

I like multiplication and division because those problems can be solved so quickly, and it is used a lot outside of school.

What are some ways that you notice yourself using math outside of school?

I used math at my parents’ garage sale.  My brother and sister and I had a lemonade stand and I had to keep track of the money.

Another way that I use math is when I cook with my parents.  We have to use fractions and know the exact amounts.  For instance, when we make lasagna we need to make sure we measure the sauce and the cheese.

I also use math when I am telling time and have to figure out how much time I have to get ready in the morning or figure out how many hours are left in school.

What advice would you give to a new third grade student about how to succeed in math?

Practice problems at home.  Be ready to know all of your times tables, count money, tell time, and add and subtract well.
