Language Arts Curriculum Grades 6 - 8

Our Middle School Language Arts program takes a comprehensive approach to literacy based on the Common Core State Standards.  Teachers use the Readers and Writers Workshop, a research-based program designed to build student lifelong reading and writing through instruction in reading and writing strategies, skills, and genres.  The workshop structure is made up of focused mini-lessons that teach a skill or strategy, a work period in which students practice their reading and/or writing, and a closure activity.  Instruction is rigorous and engaging, looking to motivate students and to prepare them for high school and beyond.

Middle School teachers build upon reading and writing strategies and skills taught in grades 1 through 5 and look to develop deeper understandings of texts.  Students who demonstrate advanced skill and motivation in language arts have the opportunity to take Accelerated Language Arts classes in 7th and 8th grades.

Finally, our Middle School Language Arts teachers enrich student vocabulary through an online program as well as through the reading and writing workshop.  Student independence and choice in reading and writing are key goals for our middle school students.
