Piscataway Township Schools have been named among the Best Communities for Music Education in America for the seventh year in a row. Piscataway is one of just 975 districts across the country to be chosen for the prestigious honor for 2024.
The NAMM Foundation (National Association of Music Merchants) has recognized the district for its outstanding commitment to music education. Piscataway is one of just 65 districts in New Jersey and four in Middlesex County to be selected.
“It is such an honor to receive this award and recognition from the NAMM foundation – especially for seven consecutive years!” said Rebekah Sterlacci, supervisor of visual and performing arts. “This national award speaks to the amazing community here in Piscataway – and the continued support that we receive for our arts curriculum and programming. This award would not be possible without our outstanding music educators, who bring joy, enthusiasm, and musical excellence to our students each day in the classroom and beyond.
“Our music programs bring so much possibility to our students – and so much hope and happiness to our whole community. Thank you to our District Administration, Board of Education, and our students and families for valuing the arts and centering our programs as the life of our community.”
Now in its 25th year, Best Communities for Music Education highlights outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders who work together to ensure access to music learning for all students as part of the school curriculum.
“This honor recognizes the outstanding efforts of Ms. Sterlacci, teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders who make music part of a well-rounded education for every student,” said Superintendent Dr. Frank Ranelli. “It illustrates our district’s exceptionally high commitment to allow every child to learn and grow with music.”
To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Piscataway Township School representatives answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified by school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
