Nancy Salgado-Cowan has been a proud Piscataway resident and homeowner for more than 20 years. Together with her husband, Steven Salgado-Cowan, she has raised their two daughters in the vibrant, diverse community they are proud to call home. Their eldest daughter, Cielo, is a graduate of Piscataway High School and earned both a Bachelor of Arts in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). Cielo is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Special Education at TCNJ, with an expected completion in 2026. Their younger daughter, Yara, is a junior at Piscataway High School and a passionate member of the school’s Dramatic Arts Academy.

For nearly three decades, Nancy has dedicated her professional career to serving children and families as a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, providing compassionate, comprehensive primary care. She currently practices at Somerset Pediatrics, where she supports the physical and emotional well-being of children and adolescents every day. She is also a Certified Lactation Consultant, helping mothers and infants build strong, healthy bonds during the earliest stages of life.

Nancy earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Wagner College in Staten Island and her Master of Science in Pediatric Nursing from Hunter College, City University of New York. She is licensed in the State of New Jersey and board-certified through the National Pediatric Certification Board.

Community service has always been central to Nancy’s life. For more than 20 years, she has volunteered extensively within Piscataway and beyond, serving in a variety of leadership roles. In 2025, she served as Vice President of the Piscataway Board of Education and most recently led the committee that selected the district’s new Superintendent. During her tenure on the Board, Piscataway has completed a district-wide strategic visioning process and earned New Jersey School Boards Association certification, reflecting a strong commitment to growth, accountability, and excellence.

Prior to joining the Board of Education, Nancy was deeply involved in school-based leadership through local PTOs. She served as Treasurer at Schor Middle School and held multiple leadership roles at Grandview School, including three years as PTO President.

Beyond the school district, Nancy is an active member of her faith community and a proud member of the Piscataway Community Choir.  She has led Sunday school teams, mentored teen girls, hosted youth peer groups in her home, and participated in a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. These experiences continue to shape her commitment to service, equity, and compassion.

Currently, Nancy chairs the Board’s Culture, Climate, and Community Relations Committee and serves on the Policy Committee as well as the Fiscal Planning and Operations Committee, where she helps shape the environment in which students learn, grow, and thrive.

As both a parent and a pediatric nurse practitioner, Nancy brings a unique and informed perspective to her work—one rooted in care, advocacy, and a deep understanding of children’s diverse needs. She firmly believes that every child is inherently valuable and deserving of a high-quality public education that nurtures individuality, challenges potential, and supports long-term success.

Nancy remains committed to being an independent, thoughtful, and responsive voice for students, families, educators, and the broader Piscataway community. She is deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve and to continue working toward a future where every child in Piscataway is seen, supported, and celebrated.
